The anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats, Green, and Change UK (CUK) parties are at each other’s throats ahead of the Peterborough by-election, with plans to back a single “Remain” candidate falling apart.
The Leave-voting constituency’s former Member of Parliament, Fiona Onasanya, was expelled from the Labour Party after being convicted for perverting the course of justice, and subsequently became the first MP in British history to be expelled from the House of Commons by a recall ballot — although not before helping anti-Brexit legislation to pass through the chamber by one vote while out from prison on an electronic tag, and comparing her situation to the persecution of Jesus Christ.
Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party has already announced businessman Mike Greene, who once appeared on The Secret Millionaire, as its candidate for the planned by-election, providing Brexit-voting constituents let down by the Tories’ repeated delays to Brexit and Labour’s ambivalent stance on delivering it with a clear “Leave” candidate.
Plans by the Liberal Democrats, Greens, and CUK to give a similar “Remain” candidate a clear run have disintegrated, however, with their reported pick Femi Oluwole — a minor social media personality and co-founder of the anti-Brexit Our Future, Our Choice group [pictured, above], itself backed by European Commission- and George Soros-backed groups such as the European Movement and Best for Britain — pulled out.
Seemingly unable to agree on another “unity” candidate between them, both the Liberal Democrats and the Greens ended up putting forward their own people under their own party banners — while CUK ultimately decided to back out of the fight.
Comprised of globalist ex-Labour and Tory defectors from the Labour and Tory parliamentary parties who want no change to Britain’s relationship with the European Union, Change UK have faced a particularly fierce ribbing for their decision not to run a candidate.
“Why not? After all, it’s a solid Brexit constituency,” mocked Paul Embery, a Brexit-supporting Labour activist with the London Fire Brigades Union.
“[It’s] Change UK’s chance to prove that the people have ‘changed their minds’,” he pointed out.
Brexit party leader Nigel Farage also mocked the failure Thursday night, asking whether the pro-remain left was split.
